Overview

This guide collects the practical tips and the lessons we learned the hard way while producing internal video training tutorials. It is written for anyone recording a walkthrough for colleagues — no prior video editing experience assumed.

Everything here comes out of a real production cycle, so the warnings are the ones that actually cost us time, not hypothetical ones.

The three phases

Every tutorial goes through the same three phases, and each has its own page in this book.

Phase	What happens	Where it usually goes wrong
1. Recording	Capture the screen walkthrough in Microsoft Teams, in short segments, with spoken take markers.	One long unbroken take with no markers — then hours of footage to search through.
2. Editing in Clipchamp	Assemble the clips, add text and graphics, correct the transcript, manage captions.	Inserting a clip after the text boxes are placed — everything downstream shifts out of sync.
3. Saving, exporting and archiving	Export the finished video, keep the project file, back up the transcript, distribute it.	Keeping only the exported file — it cannot be edited again.

⚠️ Heads up: The single most expensive mistake is treating the exported video as your master copy. An export is final and uneditable, like a flattened PDF. Always preserve and rename the original Clipchamp project file — see Export creates a final, uneditable file.

Before you start

A few minutes of preparation removes most of the rework:

Break the topic into logical modules (“Overview”, “Step 1”, “Step 2”) rather than planning one long recording.
Close unrelated applications, silence notifications, and tidy your desktop and browser tabs.
Check that nothing confidential will appear on screen — see Data privacy and compliance.
Agree a file naming convention before you record, so the project files stay traceable (for example ERM Training_v1).
Decide where the finished video will live so you are not hunting for a home for it later.
